Quixotic Ambitions

How does a red-headed, freckle-faced London girl react when suddenly confronted with the possibility of becoming Queen of a Balkan country?

In Quixotic Ambitions Pamela Lake tells the story of Katy Brennan who is suddenly offered the throne of Maloslavia, a strife-ridden, poverty stricken country in the mountains of South-Eastern Europe, struggling to recover from the collapse of Communism. Her near-forgotten father was once King, but died in suspicious circumstances when she was an infant and she was raised by her Irish mother. Now an orphan in her twenties, she is totally unfamiliar with this poor Balkan country until a telephone call from a strange countess changes her life for ever. Katy finds herself transformed into Princess Katerina Bogdanova and is plunged into a story of political intrigue, treachery and attempted assassination. But it is also the story of her meeting with Vladimir, a crippled Orthodox theological student from Maloslavia who is intent on becoming a monk, until he meets her and their friendship gradually develops into love.
Lake is well equipped to tell her tale. She has a life-long passion for Slav cultures, speaks Russian and has a degree in Russian language and literature from the Sorbonne. She has travelled extensively in Eastern Europe, including the Balkans which she knows well and has drawn on her experiences to create the imaginary country, Maloslavia.
The attempts of several exiled monarchs to return to their countries gave her the original idea for this novel which raises many questions about the nature of recent events in Europe. This is a gripping tale and a 'must read' for the informed reader.
